Brexi (closed)

In the past we've had terrible service and less than memorable food at Brexi, but we've dined there three times (at the bar) in the last three weeks, and we've come away each time extremely impressed. The Crab Cake Po' Boy is top notch, and you can never go wrong with the Brexi Bar Burger. We'll be back again and again. We're glad the beautiful interior design now has good food to go with it!

Overall the food was above average; the bisque was delicious and the strip was probably as good as a strip can get. The service however was horrible and will probably prevent a repeat visit.

The couple that own The Wild Fig and Lulu Wilson have opened the Brexi Brasserie, which we went to with great skepticism, assuming that this place represented one more misunderstanding of what brasseries (or bistrots) are all about. It's a happening/hot place that's taken a lot of flak on EatAspen, and I entered the first time with a chip on my shoulder. Loud bass-amplified nonsense music, pretentious setting, busses and motorcycles destroying the air and my tranquility - Oh boy am I gonna trash this place. So I ask the waitress why is this called a brasserie? Says she "well we have a lot of beers and the menu is designed like that of a brasserie" (which it was) - 2 points out of 3 (deduct 1 for no Alsatian owners, choucroute or oysters.) But new respect from me. I ordered the confit de canard special of the day (Tuesdays) which she very quickly informed me was not the traditional whole confit with salad and potatoes on the side but a frisee salad with diced up confit bits, etc. - good waitress! I switched to a steak au poivre (being immersed in memories of Julia Child's Birthday August 15th and the movie and appropriate commemorations). It was quite good; good quality beef, properly under-cooked, with good frites and a great rosemary wine sauce. Colette had the salad with watermelon, which almost held up to that she had at Frenchie's last month. We were so pleased we returned a few days later; and the second time we ate there I did have the special (Friday), called a boeuf bourgignon, which again had great beef with carrots and turnips etc., but in a mustardy sauce unlike any I've ever had before; not bad just different from the usual. Colette had a chicken breast with a genuine frisee salad that she quite liked. At both meals, we were quite content. With a bottle of wine and two Lavazza coffees our bill was $78.50 the first time and without coffee $72.70 John Talbott's Paris

After my wife told me about her lack luster experiences at Brexi I can't beleive I decided to try it out, and I wish I had not! As with the previous reveiw, the Caesar salad was so overdressed it was soggy, the lettuce was far from fresh (starting to brown on the edges) and it had so much Parmesan cheese it made it so that was all I could taste. I got the Steak au poivre thinking this would be a safe choice, I was wrong. The steak itself was fine (although overcooked by at least one temparature) the house cut fries were cold, soggy and so overseasoned they were unedible. (Content Removed) One would think that (Content Removed) they could find a chef who can make a decent salad and French fries, but I guess not! Next time I'm going to Little Annie's, at least they can consistantly make good salads and fries that are actually crispy and hot! Went to Brexi due to the high recommendations from the Ritz. We dined late and the place was pretty empty. The decor was hip and nice... The service was poor and it started with the water person missing the glass for 10 seconds,, then apologizing but forgetting to to clean up the spill on the table. The 1st course took 30 min to get there. Never new for the six of us the salad would take that long. The French onion soup was wayyy to sweet and had an acrid after taste. The caesar salad was bland and was doused with pasmesan and "drowned" the salad. The filet was good thank god...The Lemon sole was way too thick in crust and was completely overpowered by the corn and the sauce.....It was so bad that i was thinking it would be better with vinegar as "fish and chips"...All together very sub mediocre. The bigger problem was the manager on duty. He basically came by and said " we have received many rewards and that we must be wrong" Imagine that ! No apology for the slow service nor explanation. We have been to many restaurants in NYC, and aspen and in this business arroagance by the head of the staff is a poor indicator of an appreciation of the customer. Hope Craig Cordts-Pearce understands that his other restaurants we have frequented (LuLu Wilson and Wild Fig ) live up to his mission of giving his customers a unique dining experience. Too bad his manager doesn't understand more than the depth of t=his arrogance... It almost seemed as if he couldn't believe that we had issues with the service and the blandness of the food. We called it a night ....Poor treatment with bland subpar food on our visit

I couldn't disagreee more with Dalanie (see comment below). I have been to Brexi twice: first time when it first opened and just recently befere the Food and Wine craziness. The food was superb, service was outstanding and Craig and Samantha are the best hosts in town!!!! Strongly recommneded!!Bon Apetite

My 1st experience at Brexi (Mid March) was fantastic, the Caesar salad and Lemon Sole were outstanding. Our server Chealsea was great, attentive and well read on the menu and wine list. On our 2nd visit a couple of nights ago, we had a much different experience. This time around the Salad was lack luster and the lettuce was old and begining to turn brown. The Soup Du Jour which was highly praised by our server was barely warm and relatively flavorless. The menu seems to have changed, and when we inquired we were informed there was a new Head Chef in the kitchen. I ordered the lamb which was cooked medium well (Ordered medium rare) it was bland and uninspired! Brexi is going in the wrong direction, the new Menu/Chef seem to be an enormous step down in quality. Maybe it was an off day, but with the food being less than average, and the service average we probably will not be back. It is a sign of concern to have such a fantastic experience our first visit ( Food and Service) and then our second visit, average uncaring service, a New Chef who is obviously not up to the task.

Had the steak tartar; very good. My companion had the chicken; OK.

The dynamic duo responsible for Aspen gems: LuLu Wilson and The Wild Fig, have devised yet another way to keep me from eating at home. Classic brasserie fare with a contemporary twist, housed in the sexiest restaurant space in Aspen. A lengthy description is unnecessary - this place checks every box and delivers a perfect dining experience. I ate here 3 out of 5 nights during my trip to Aspen and cannot wait to go back.

It happened here. I was waiting for that first Aspen knock out, and Brexi hit on every cylinder. There are plenty of places to begin, but the story truly begins and ends with the sommelier. ( Yes, the sommelier ) It's hard to base this review on a "wine geek" but ya' know what, he broke the mold, and truly established a completely new breed. Our reservations were adored, and we were seated in a beautiful part of the room with a great view up Aspen mountain. And then it began... Who would have thought that when dining in Aspen, the BEER selection and sommelier would be such a hit!? He was fantastic. I've been to my share of SF restaurants with sommeliers clearing making it apparent that you are an idiot, and they are the all knowing. But this guy was passionate! It's always great to see someone finding his niche, and loving every minute of it. Brexi had 3 specialty beers in house, and by chance and fortune, we were able to have all 3! A quick insight, the braised short ribs were divine. Served in a warm pot, with root vegetables and hearty portions, the ribs were perfect. Each fiber of meat had soaked up it's delivering broth, and it was an entree that left you full but walkable. Perfect. And do NOT dismiss the lamb shank. It is a Monday night special, but if you had to choose a night to come, this dish is one very good excuse. A huge lamb shank, served on a pillow of truffle potatoes, this dish hit it out of the park. BUT, back to the liquid gold. We were able to have a rare Dogfish Head beer that was actually barelled in pinot noir barrels, and it was by far one of the most unique, strong, and delicious beers I have ever had. It was a Red and White, malt beverage brewed with coriander and orange peel and the subtle essence of Pinot was amazing. Mind blowing really. It was phenomenal, and the best part, because it was not chilled when we had ordered it, he offered us a Duchesse De Bourgogne, and it was another great beer. This is a remarkable addition to the Aspen restaurant community, and while only a few weeks old, it has true potential and peak high opportunity to make a true splash in this cultured mecca of food. My one dislike. (a personal dislike) The tiled floors. Yes, I said it. I don't like black and white tiled floors.It reminds me of generation old bathrooms floors, and that isn't the floor vibe I wanted from a burgeoning new food room in Aspen. But hey, it really doesn't matter. The food was outstanding, and the serivice was remarkable. I only wish I could come here daily...

I thought this place was really good. I was with a party of 8 and each person said they absolutely loved the meal they ordered. The staff was really nice and really made an effort to make us feel welcome. The decor was nice, although a bit dim. I guess if it were brighter it would change the mood, so I'm fine the way it is. The desserts were AMAZING. we ordered one of each so I had a chance to taste all 7 or 8. Overall, excellent. My new favorite restaurant in town.

3 of 4 disappointed with the food. Atmosphere loud. Martin, our waiter seemed as if he didn't care. The owner, Craig, was rude as we were deciding on high traffic area table vs. a noisy table.

Highly anticipated new restaurant from one of the more successful restauranteurs in Aspen. Nice location off the beaten path with easy parking. Nice, Bistro like decor that keeps an active bar scene separate from the dining tables. The dining area is somewhat cramped, dimly lit (making the small print-off white menu hard to read), and congested near the entrance where the hostess, coat check, and some tables are very close together. The attitude is cordially efficient and aloof. I did not feel particularly welcome (4 diners for dinner), engaged, or appreciated by the host who happened to be the owner. The wait staff was efficient, but impatient and not especially cognizant of the details of the dishes on the menu. More than once when asked for advice, he walked away to do something else without responding. It may have been the general noise level that is sometimes typical in a bistro that made full table conversation near impossible. The service was fair, with several instances of needing to look for a wait staff and motioning and even calling for them when some type of routine service was not performed. We never did see the owner again; little interest in the quality or pleasure of our experience, I guess. I expect he did not know we were residents. The food was good in spots, but not exceptional and some of it was very plain and boring. The wine list was generally good, with a few "bargains" at $50/bottle, many in the $75-$90 range. The restaurant has a long way to go and I would not likely go back for dinner, although it may be a good place to get together with friends at the bar.

Delicious food in a great atmosphere. I will defintely recommend this restaurants to friends.

I went to the opening of Brexi on Saturday. We only went for a cocktail to check out the menu and the scene. I loved the atmosphere and the layout of Brexi. The Aspen restaurant sits on a corner with plenty of windows. I can't wait to try Brexi in the summer. The windows and doors can be thrown open for great dining outside! We both had cocktails which were promptly served. We checked out the menu and noticed a lack of vegetarian meals, but some delicious looking fish dishes. The place eventually filled up with many locals also checking out the new Aspen restaurant. I can't wait to try the food in a couple of weeks, once all the kinks are out!
