Highlands Black Tie & Duct Tape Ball

Last winter, 2009 that is,  Aspen Highlands Ski area celebrated it’s 5oth anniversary with an evening bash at the mid mountain restaurant the Merry-go-Round.  There was a equal mix of ski bum, ski patrol, and ski brass. A buffet, Champagne, wine, cocktails, and a Jamming band (Jes Crew).  The attire was black tie & duct tape, which was adhered to in some since with some full on tux & tails ensembles as well as the duct tape enthusiasts (the creative crowd).

It all proved to be a very unique and entertaining experience.  So why not do it again.  This Saturday February 27, 2010 is the second “Black Tie & Duct Tape Ball at Aspen Highlands”.  Aspen Ski Company employees can purchase tickets for $40, $65 for non-employees. Includes buffet dinner with prime rib and a glass or wine or beer/  Live band and dancing with Nite Plane. Upload Exhibition lift from 6-6:60pm downloading to begin at 9:30pm (no skiing down) Tickets available at any Aspen”Snowmass ticket office or by calliny (970)-544-3045

The bar was overwhelmed with it’s popularity last year, let’s hope they learned that lesson.  Ski bums & patrol outweighed the brass 10 to 1 so it’s not your typical Aspen cocktail soirée but it is good to see the elbows rub.  And hey, if your not gonna be wearing a tux you better have on some duct tape!

Fat Tuesday

Filed under: Events, Snowmass Restaurants — Tags: , , , , , — edi @ 11:08 pm February 13, 2010

Join the final feast of Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday February 16 in Snowmass, Colorado.  The Mardi Gras Parade is at 4pm in the Snowmass Village Mall. Apres Ski at 5pm at Snowmass bars and restaurants.

Although a very minor reflection of the parades along Canal St. in “Nrlins” it is entertaining.  Purple & Gold beads are aplenty however they lack the proper exchange rate.  You can find a great party afterward in the Snowmass bars.  I swear once at the Mountain Dragon, with the jamming  band, it had the funk of the house of the rising sun.

Free Soup!! Aspen’s Soupskol 2010 happens tonight Jan. 15  from 5:30-7:30 pm  Located on Hunter St. & Cooper St. in downtown Aspen. This event is free and open to the public.!

By far one of our favorite events, expect 20 plus tents serving a number of different soups. Every taster has a vote.  Vote honestly.  Rumors abound about stuffed ballot boxes… one restaurant has won the title 3 years running,  it could be the best soup or perhaps it’s just the ringing of the bell.  With the inclusion of Ute City Medicinals there may even be a hemp soup..

Watch Eat Aspen Original Short of WinterSkol Past.

“The 7th Annual Winterskol Soupskol is a soup-cooking contest judged by the public to determine what restaurant has the best soup in town and it gives the winner bragging rights for the next year! Organized by the Aspen Chamber Resort Association the Aspen restaurants entering SoupSkol 2010 are 39 degrees, Aspen Valley Hospital, Elks lodge, Bad Billys, Blue Sky Cafe, Brunelleschi’s, Clark’s Market, Conundrum Catering, European Caterers, Flame Catering & Aspen Brewing Company, Garnish Cafe,  Highlands Pizza Co. Aspen July 4th Parties

The Hotel Jerome isn’t the only Hotel hosting an open to the public event for July Fourth. Independence day in Aspen has always been a party starting with the dynamite on smuggler, or is that a canon, at 6am.

-The Aspen Valley Ski Club hosts a community picnic at Koch Park 1pm July 4th. Its a fundraiser and good grub can be had for $5 kids under 10 and $10 for adults or $8 if your an AVSC member. BBQ with burgers and other tasty food items and cold beer can be had for a little extra. Music, Vollyball, kids games, and a true sense of community. If you are an Aspen visitor and want to get an insiders view on Aspen, this is the spot you should visit and leave with tips that would blow away any concierge guide.

-The Aspen Art Museum has been promoting FREE ART also throws a free community picnic with food (last year was Barbecue ribs by the Hickory House & Beer from the Aspen Brewery)

-The St. Regis is inviting you to see the fireworks from their poolside patio and to enjoy complimentary appetizers from 7-10pm

-The Molly Gibson is opening their pool to the public on July 4th.  Sandman will be hosting karaoke in the sun all afternoon long. There will be food and drinks and everyone is welcome.

Happy Fourth of July…..  Put the Bang Back in your mouth at any Aspen Restaurant.

Aspen “Friday” Farmer’s Market?

This week Aspen’s Saturday Farmers Market will be on Friday July 3rd on Hunter St. and Hopkins Ave. Since July 4th falls on Saturday the street closures for the parade coupled with the closed streets for the market equals strangling all downtown Aspen traffic on the busiest day of the year. So they must separate the two from each other. The Fourth of July Parade must really happen on the 4th of July in Aspen so Aspen’s Saturday Market must happen on Friday. Got it… Good… Personally I think you just have the two together and make the 4th one big pedestrian friendly festival.

But What is Really important is…..
We will be making our annual appearance 4th of July week at the Aspen Farmer’s Market this Friday July 3rd. The EatAspen booth will once again judge who amongst us is the Fastest Watermelon Eater in the West at high noon.

2008 Champ at the finish line

2008 Champ at the finish line

We are also calling on all Aspenites & Aspen Ideas Festival attendees to take a chance with your powers of the mind by trying to win the Jelly Bean Counting contest.

1-2-3-4....

1-2-3-4....

This is actually quite entertaining for us, watching minds at work, especially young minds. Closest to the actual number wins all the beans.  Find the EatAspen.com booth in front of The Cheese Shop / Specialty Foods of Aspen on Hunter Street in downtown Aspen Friday July 3rd and say hi, take a guess, have some melon, and be happy.

Food & Wine Festival

Filed under: Aspen Restaurants, Events — Tags: , — edi @ 6:00 am

I checked out Aspen’s Food and Wine Festival. I can’t believe you can fit that many people into Aspen! All the restaurants in Aspen were packed and people were spilling into the streets. Everyone was wearing their food and wine pass with zeal!   It was great to see town buzzing with energy and most of the shops were open and had their own parties going on.

The music school students added an extra ambience to downtown with a different group playing on every corner.

Here are a few pics from a short walk around town.

Other Food at Chili Pepper & Brew Fest

A week after the blast we still want to reminisce about some of the side show treats.
Sometimes you just need something sweet. After a day of tasting chili at the Snowmass Chili Pepper & Brew Fest it was time to try out the other options. I started with mini donuts from Jake’s Donuts. Yummy! They make them to order!  Jake’s mom poured in the batter and little donuts dropped into the frying. Soon they were sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon!  The little donuts melted as I popped them into my mouth.

Who can pass up the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory? The carmel apples looked so good and I figured I need a little fruit. I tried the carmel apple which was also dipped in chocolate and cinnamon and sugar. Wow!  It was so rich. I could only eat half and took the rest home. The next day I headed back to the Chocolate Factory and bought a pretzle dipped in chocolate with mini m&ms sprinkled on top. Wow! Who would have thought a chocolate dipped preztle has the perfect ratio of salty and sweet?  I could have eaten a couple of those.

I couldn’t stop with the pretzels, I had to move to the booth next to it and grab some popcorn and candied pecans. I love candied nuts and ate half the bag right there! Every festival the nut guys seem to be there. I always look forward to buying a couple bags of candied nuts.

Normally I wouldn’t buy so many sweets but hey I was a bit tipsy and everything looked so good. I didn’t want to wait until the next Snowmass Chili Pepper & Brew Fest!
